From Brazil to the Netherlands: Osmar’s global engineering journey

07|11|2025

At MULTI.engineering, we believe that the strength of our projects lies in the talent and diversity of our team. One standout example is Osmar Elias da Silva Filho, a project engineer whose journey across continents and ship types exemplifies the international mindset we value.

OSmar
Starting point: Brazil to Spain

Originally from Brazil, Osmar’s path into engineering took shape during his university years when he participated in an exchange program to Spain. “That’s where I first got into shipbuilding”, explains Osmar. He joined the Spanish company Ghenova Ingeniería and later returned to Brazil to continue working at their local branch. “I worked on LPG carriers and special offshore vessels, like PLSVs – vessels that lay pipelines on the seabed for oil platforms.”

Growing in responsibility

From 2013 to 2019, Osmar worked inside Brazilian shipyards operated by VARD, a Norwegian company. His responsibilities grew steadily, and he eventually became technical coordinator for a project delivering a SeaWalk platform to Jamaica. “I was invited to coordinate the SeaWalk project, which was a floating platform for cruise ships. That was a big professional milestone for me – being responsible for the delivery and going to Jamaica for the handover.”

Innovation in Norway

In 2019, Osmar moved to Norway to join a groundbreaking project with VARD: the world’s first fully electric, autonomous, zero-emission container carrier. The vessel, developed for a fertilizer company, presented major technical and regulatory challenges. “It was super challenging because the rules didn’t exist yet, so we had to work closely with the classification society to figure everything out.” Osmar not only contributed as a project engineer but also stepped up as interim coordinator when his manager had to take leave. “It was tough, but I was proud that everything worked out perfect.”

Joining MULTI.engineering

In early 2020, Osmar took the next step in his professional journey by joining MULTI.engineering in the Netherlands. “I found a job post on LinkedIn that offered something new – working on superyachts, something I had never done before”, he recalls. Osmar joined our Zwijndrecht office just three months before the COVID-19 pandemic, and since then, he has contributed to a wide range of projects: from refitting a 95-meter yacht to 105 meters, to converting bulk carriers into fall pipe vessels, to working on military vessels such as frigates for the Colombian and Dutch navies. “I really like the variety of the projects.”

Why MULTI.engineering feels like home

What truly sets MULTI.engineering apart for Osmar is the supportive, human-centric culture. Having worked in large shipyards with thousands of employees, Osmar was struck by the warm and personal environment at MULTI.engineering. “At previous companies, it took me years to get to know the top management. At MULTI.engineering, the sales manager invited me for a casual lunch before I even started”, he says. “Everyone – from HR to management – knows who you are, supports you, and cares about your well-being.”

MULTI.engineering also helped him relocate and settle in the Netherlands. “They helped with the visa, finding housing – everything”, Osmar says. That strong foundation has kept him rooted here for over five years.

Looking ahead with openness

Now deeply settled in Dutch life and professional culture, Osmar doesn’t feel the need to chase new destinations. “I like it here, so I don’t have big plans to move again soon. I prefer to remain open to new opportunities and challenges as they arise”, he explains. His broad experience – from autonomous vessels to yachts to military frigates – has equipped him with a flexible mindset and a deep reservoir of knowledge.

Thriving at MULTI.engineering

At MULTI.engineering, we’re proud to have professionals like Osmar on board – people who combine technical expertise with cross-cultural experience, and who thrive in our collaborative, people-first environment. His journey reflects what MULTI.engineering is all about: engineering excellence, international ambition, and the power of personal connection.
