- Role: Technical Writer AMD
- Workplace: Gorinchem, Netherlands, with 50/50 hybrid working
- Start: 1 August or later in August
- Duration: Minimum 6 months
- Contract: Employment contract or freelance assignment
- Focus: Vessel Operating Manuals, DITA, CCMS, technical publications, vessel systems
As a Maritime Technical Writer, you will create and maintain technical content for Vessel Operating Manuals. These manuals describe onboard systems, individual components, system relationships, safety instructions, and operating procedures for different vessel types.
The exact vessel type will be confirmed based on project planning. The role is available both as a permanent employment position and as a freelance assignment.
Where You’ll Work :
You will work from the engineering office in Gorinchem, with hybrid working options of around 50% from home and 50% on site.
You will be part of a technical documentation environment where engineering information, supplier input, and operational requirements come together in customer-facing manuals.
What You’ll Be Working On:
Your main focus will be the Vessel Operating Manual. This manual gives vessel operators detailed information about onboard systems, equipment, components, operating modes, and relevant documentation.
The manuals include instructions for start-up and shutdown of main machinery, as well as operation of primary, secondary, electrical, and auxiliary systems. For each system, you will help describe the system function, layout, operating instructions, system modes, safety warnings, and links with other onboard systems.
What You’ll Do:
- Write and maintain technical content for Vessel Operating Manuals.
- Create DITA topic-based content, including concepts, tasks, and references.
- Build and maintain DITA maps, bookmaps, and reusable content libraries.
- Work in a DITA-compliant CCMS, such as MadCap IXIA CCMS.
- Interpret GA drawings, schematics, exploded views, specifications, and configuration data.
- Translate technical and engineering input into clear operator-focused instructions.
- Analyse supplier and OEM documentation and select relevant content for customer manuals.
- Restructure supplier information into reusable DITA-compliant topics.
- Support modular publications for PDF, web, and IETP outputs.
- Gather information through SME interviews, literature study, and technical reviews.
- Work closely with engineers, asset managers, service teams, and technical specialists.
- Provide feedback to improve source information from engineering and supplier documentation.
Profile
What You Bring:
- Experience as a Technical Writer in a technical, engineering, maritime, offshore, shipbuilding, or industrial environment.
- Proficiency in DITA topic-based authoring and information typing.
- Experience with DITA maps, bookmaps, modular content, and content reuse.
- Experience working in a DITA-compliant CCMS.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and engineering documentation.
- Understanding of mechanical, electrical, or integrated system architectures.
- Experience turning technical source material into clear user-facing instructions.
- Ability to assess supplier manuals and identify relevant content based on scope and configuration.
- A clear, concise writing style focused on operational use.
- Confidence working with engineers and subject matter experts.
- Professional English language skills.
- EU citizenship, due to the short contract period and project timing.
