Patrick Aerts

Patrick has been working at MULTI.Engineering since 2012, alternately at the Design & Engineering Office or at clients where he assists them with various projects. He has been working at the maritime engineering firm Nevesbu since July 2021. This is a new customer and he is part of the Structural Team there. Nevesbu provides advanced technical solutions for complex maritime projects in the submarines, naval vessels, floating offshore energy and special ships markets. Nevesbu is a growing company that likes to work with partner companies such as MULTI.Engineering. Patrick is working on the refit of a naval vessel. It concerns a mid-life refit as the ship was built in 2000 and has now completed 22 years of service. 17 rooms have to be adapted and equipped with the latest systems regarding weapons, communication, radar and the like.

In the preliminary design phase, a rough draft is made of all the things that need to be done. This draft is sent to the customer for review and after approval by the customer, you can proceed to the critical design stage. In this phase, all production drawings with all detailed information such as positions on board, dimensions, weld and chamfer and profile end shapes are worked out.

In addition, you also have assembly drawings and mono drawings of the individual plate parts and a part list.

Demolition drawings are also made in which the existing steel is removed and reused if possible or replaced with new steel.

It is a complex project in the sense that little information is available. The ship is in use and that makes it difficult to take measurements. They have to rely on the information they receive from colleagues who conduct a survey on board the sailing vessel. Also based on the existing plans, but there too you have the question whether everything is correct. Has everything been carried out according to plan in the construction of the ship?

As an engineering firm, Nevesbu does not have its own yard. All production and demolition work is carried out on location at the customer. In the case of the mid-life refit naval vessel for a navy in Asia, these works are carried out on site.
