Home-grown mussels

Belgium can soon have its own ‘home-grown’ mussels! Thanks to Colruyt Group who is gearing up to scale their pilot offshore mussels-farming project in the Westdiep zone, off the Belgian Coast.

MULTI.engineering teamed up with our sister company Maridea and Ghent University to perform the FEED study for this sea farm project. The FEED focused on the sea farm dynamics of the long-line system and the anchor-soil interactions. The longline system was analyzed in Orcaflex software and the anchor was analytically verified. Several scenarios were investigated considering the growth stage of mussels, tidal variations, current, wind, waves and the harvesting load cases.

The FEED study was completed effectively to the highest satisfaction of client. The successful implementation of this sea-farm will make the national dish of Belgium ‘moules-frites’ in every sense with the most important ingredient being ‘home-grown’.
