Anil Gürlek embraces new opportunities with the support of MULTI.engineering

04|04|2025

Moving to a new country for work is an exciting yet challenging adventure, especially when navigating unfamiliar systems and cultures. Anil Gürlek, an engineering expert from Türkiye, knows this too well. After completing his master’s degree in Europe, Anil moved to Belgium to pursue greater career opportunities. Since November 2023, he has been working as a project engineer at MULTI.engineering, where his professional journey has flourished.

Anil
A strong academic and professional foundation

Anil’s academic journey in naval architecture and marine engineering began in Istanbul, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After graduating in 2020, he worked for a year at a shipyard in Istanbul. However, his desire to expand his knowledge in emerging maritime fields led him to the Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Sustainable Ship and Shipping 4.0. “This program allowed me to specialize in digitalization and ship management while gaining valuable international experience living in Italy and Spain.”

The decision to work abroad was driven by Anil’s ambition for career growth and Europe's professional development opportunities, particularly in the rapidly advancing maritime sector. “I saw Europe, particularly Belgium, as the ideal location to foster my career and achieve a great work-life balance. Nevertheless, the decision had its challenges”, he explains. “Leaving everyone and everything behind was a difficult choice, but my wife, family, and friends played a crucial role in making the transition smoother. Ultimately, the professional and personal benefits of living and working in Europe outweighed the challenges.”

Finding the right fit

When Anil decided to move to Belgium, his search led him to MULTI.engineering, a company that stood out due to its clear vision for the future, commitment to development, and a work culture centered on collaboration. “This environment has already contributed to my professional growth. At MULTI.engineering, teamwork is highly valued, with colleagues at all levels approachable and ready to support each other.”

Anil has worked as a project engineer with MULTI.engineering for over a year and a half. He engages in naval architecture and simulation projects related to energy-saving solutions. In his current role, he leads two major projects: developing technical specifications for shipyards and creating an LNG simulation for a client.

Practical and administrative support

In addition to offering a welcoming and supportive work environment, MULTI.engineering also played a crucial role in helping Anil settle into life in Belgium: “The company offered me temporary housing, but I preferred to find a permanent place where I could stay right away. MULTI.engineering provided valuable guidance throughout my housing search, suggesting suitable neighborhoods and connecting me with agencies. They even assisted me when language barriers made it difficult to communicate with landlords or agencies.”

Besides housing, MULTI.engineering helped Anil navigate the bureaucratic aspects of living in Belgium, such as securing his residency permit, handling waste collection procedures, and opening a bank account. The company supported him in attending language courses, integration courses and even guided him in obtaining his Belgian driving license. “Their assistance has been invaluable. I could focus on settling into my new role and adjusting to life in a new country without being overwhelmed by administrative hurdles.”

Overcoming cultural differences

Moving to Belgium initially brought some cultural shocks for Anil: “One of my biggest challenges was adjusting to the quieter lifestyle here compared to Spain. You can eat until midnight in Spain, and stores stay open late. In Belgium, many stores close by six, and restaurants don’t stay open late, which was a big adjustment.”

Additionally, he faced unexpected barriers, such as Belgium’s complex waste separation regulations, which initially seemed overwhelming. “It took me a few months to figure out how to properly separate my waste,” he laughs.

Settling in

Over time, Anil started to feel more at home in Belgium. He has come to appreciate Belgium's beautiful cities, like Ghent, as well as its peaceful surroundings and unique architecture. Anil has also embraced outdoor activities such as visiting castles, hiking, and cycling.

“Since living in Belgium, I have started to bike to work when the weather is good,” Anil shares. “It is something I never did before, but now I find it enjoyable. The bike ride is a great way to appreciate the beauty of the countryside. It also helps me to stay active and energized throughout the day.”

Beyond work, Belgium's excellent work-life balance and the collaborative atmosphere at MULTI.engineering have contributed to Anil’s personal growth and happiness. The company’s flexible working hours and support for cultural integration, such as language courses, helped him feel at home.

Future aspirations

Anil’s advice for engineering professionals considering a move abroad is clear: thorough research and preparation are key. “Before moving, always research where you are going and what you will do,” he emphasizes. Anil highlights the importance of understanding the country’s rules, regulations, daily life, and social culture: “It is wise to consider every aspect of life, both mentally and economically, before deciding to move.”

What does the future hold? “I plan to continue adapting to Belgium and growing professionally in the short term. In the long term, I would like to be part of a management team in projects I’m working on.” Anil is also determined to improve his language skills, especially his Dutch. He would like to be able to speak with a person in front of him easily. “As I look ahead, I am certain I will remain committed to both my personal and professional development in Belgium.”

The assistance of MULTI.engineering has been invaluable. I could focus on settling into my new role and adjusting to life in a new country without being overwhelmed by administrative hurdles.
